SCCS is proud to announce that our free online course Climate Change: Carbon Capture and Storage has now welcomed over 50,000 learners worldwide.
Since its launch in 2018, the course has become the world’s leading massive open online course (MOOC) on carbon capture and storage (CCS). Over the years, it has grown and adapted: expanding and updating content, introducing a Mandarin version to reach new audiences, and extending availability beyond edX to Coursera.
CCS has experienced its share of ups and downs over the past two decades. At times, projects have stalled, policies have shifted, and public debate has raised challenges. Yet throughout, the international research community has continued to build knowledge, advance technologies, and demonstrate the vital role of CCS in tackling the climate crisis. Today, CCS is widely recognised as an essential technology for achieving net zero, alongside renewables and other climate solutions.
Learners from across the world – from students and professionals to policymakers and citizens – have joined the course to better understand the value and necessity of CCS in limiting global warming. This milestone of 50,000 learners demonstrates the power of accessible education to connect global communities around climate action.
“The MOOC was fun to make, and I learned a lot about making film clips! I’m delighted that others have found it useful, and I know from meeting people who have done the MOOC that they’ve learned too, which is great.”
– Mark Wilkinson, Professor of GeoEnergy at the University of Edinburgh
“It’s been eight years since we launched our free online course on CCS, as a response to the then lack of progress in deploying the technology in the UK – and elsewhere. CCS has come a long way since, with many new commercial projects now under construction or in the pipeline in the UK – and elsewhere.
50,000 is a fantastic milestone, but it is also a reminder that we will rely on the skills, expertise and enthusiasm of tens of thousands of CCS practitioners to roll out one of the largest industries to be created this century.”
– Professor Mathieu Lucquiaud, University of Sheffield and Deputy Director of the UK CCS Research Centre
“Reaching 50,000 learners is a powerful reminder that people around the world are eager to understand and engage with carbon capture and storage. CCS may have faced uncertainty at times, but the science is clear: it is one of the few technologies that can deliver deep emissions reductions and permanent carbon removal. We are proud that this course helps build the knowledge and skills needed for the next generation of climate solutions.”
– Dr Erika Palfi, Decarbonisation Research and Technical Adviser at SCCS and course organiser
We thank all our learners, partners and contributors for making this achievement possible – and we look forward to continuing this journey together.
