As the world looks toward COP30 in Brazil to accelerate global climate action, Scottish Carbon Capture & Storage (SCCS), based at the University of Edinburgh, is proud to announce the return of its live-moderated, world-leading, free online course on carbon capture and storage (CCS) — a vital technology in the transition to net zero.
The massive open online course (MOOC) on CCS welcomes learners worldwide and requires no prior knowledge of the subject. Running over five weeks from 4th November 2025, the course provides an engaging and comprehensive exploration of the science, technology, and policy of CCS. Developed and delivered by experts at the University of Edinburgh, it combines foundational knowledge with real-world case studies, practical exercises, and opportunities for interactive discussion with moderators and peers.
Dr. Erika Palfi, the course organiser, emphasised the ongoing importance of CCS in tackling climate change, stating, “CCS is not a silver bullet, but it aids in tackling the energy trilemma by improving security, affordability, and sustainability while emissions are rapidly reduced. This course provides learners with evidence and tools to understand where CCS fits, and the specific role it plays. As we race towards net zero, we must ensure reliable energy and fair bills. Our MOOC demystifies the science and policy so people can make informed, confident decisions.”
Now in its live-moderated format once again, the course continues to grow its global reach and impact. More than 50,000 individuals have completed the course to date, gaining the knowledge and tools to understand and communicate the role of CCS in addressing climate change. This milestone demonstrates the power of accessible education to connect global communities around climate action.
Dr. Palfi added, “Heading into COP30, our aim is clear: to build climate literacy at scale. Over 50,000 learners have already joined us, and we are inviting thousands more to challenge claims, ask insightful questions, and apply CCS knowledge where it counts.”
