CCS Group Meeting - April 2014

  • Thursday, 10 April 2014 15:00 - 17:00

Venue: Room PG202, Postgraduate Centre, Heriot-Watt University

Our bi-monthly CCS Group meeting for researchers in our partner institutes.

There was an international theme to April's gathering of SCCS researchers, which was held at Heriot-Watt University. The meeting began with an excellent talk from Professor Rick Chalaturnyk, of the University of Alberta, who spoke about his MMV work at the Aquistore research and monitoring project in Canada, and its links with the trailblazing Boundary Dam CCS Project. Dr Xi Liang of the UoE's Business School explained more about the exciting collaboration between industry, governments and academics from China's Guangdong province and the UK. Dr Peter Brownsort, our Scientific Research Officer, provided a description and analysis of a key SCCS resource - the Global CCS Map - which he has extensively updated, but with a view to future enhancements. Juan Alcalde of UoE explained more about his research work at the well-known storage project at Hontomin CO₂ in Spain.

Dr Maxine Akhurst (British Geological Survey and SCCS Directorate) provided a whistlestop tour of the many and varied research projects being carried out by researchers at BGS. And we welcomed Dr David Vega-Maza from University of Aberdeen, who gave an overview of the breadth of CCS research ongoing at our new partner institute. Dr Aimaro Sanna of HWU provided a fascinating talk on CCS through mineral carbonation, and PhD student, Marius Dewar, described his work on modelling of physical-chemical impacts of leaked CO₂ from seabeds.

Our thanks to our excellent speakers and to everyone who came along - it was a great turn-out. We hope you can join us at the next meeting, which will be announced in due course.
